You generally visit a car dealership expecting to leave with a brochure, a finance quotation or a determination never to accept the first part-exchange offer. Subaru is now offering something rather more useful: a free PSA blood test to complete at home.
Men aged 50 and over can discreetly pick up one of the complimentary testing kits from any of Subaru’s 54 UK sales dealerships
. You don’t need to roll up your sleeve beside the Forester, either.
The tests are funded by Subaru UK and provided by Selph, a home-testing company run by doctors. Each kit uses a pin-prick blood sample, which you collect at home and post to an accredited laboratory.
Results are often available the day after the sample reaches the lab, accompanied by a doctor’s report explaining what the result means and what, if anything, you should do next.
What exactly is a PSA test?
PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate. Measuring its level in your blood can help identify whether you might benefit from further investigation.
It’s important to understand that this isn’t a cancer diagnosis.
A raised PSA level can have several causes, including an enlarged prostate, infection, inflammation, vigorous exercise and recent ejaculation. Some men with prostate cancer can also have a result within the expected range.
That potential for both false alarms and missed cancers is why the UK doesn’t have a routine national PSA screening programme. Men are advised to understand the advantages and limitations before choosing to take a test.
Dr Alasdair Scott of Selph said: “PSA testing can’t provide a diagnosis, but it can provide an important early indication of prostate cancer risk.
“By making PSA testing available through its dealer network, Subaru UK is helping more men take a proactive step towards understanding their prostate health and seeking further medical advice where needed.”
Should you pick one up?
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among UK men, with risk increasing after the age of 50.
Black men and those with a close family history of prostate cancer face a higher risk from around 45 and may want to discuss testing with their GP earlier.
Men over 50 can already ask their GP for a PSA test, but Subaru’s scheme offers another convenient and discreet way to take that first step.
Anyone experiencing symptoms or changes to the way they urinate should speak to their GP rather than relying on a home test.
