The Pirelli Calendar has been synonymous with sultry sophistication for over half a century, and the 2025 edition, shot by Ethan James Green, is no exception. Titled “Refresh and Reveal,” this year’s calendar takes a stripped-back approach — literally and figuratively — celebrating the human form in all its diverse glory.

Ethan James Green, who received the birthday surprise of his career when chosen for the project, brings his trademark elegance and boldness to this edition. A fan of the iconic 1990s calendars by Richard Avedon and Herb Ritts, Green sought to create timeless images that future generations will admire — or perhaps blush at — in 20 or 30 years.

Shot on Miami’s historic Virginia Key Beach Park, the 2025 Pirelli Calendar features a stellar cast of actors, artists, singers, and models, including John Boyega, Hunter Schafer, Padma Lakshmi, and Jodie Turner-Smith. The 24 photos showcase each subject in both colour and black and white, blending modernity with classic allure. Even Green himself joins the lineup, making him only the third photographer in the Calendar’s history to step in front of the lens. As Green puts it, “The only person I could tell to be completely nude was myself.” For someone more accustomed to being behind the camera, baring it all on set was, he admits, “quite freeing.”

But don’t mistake this calendar for mere eye candy. Behind the sultry stares and soft-lit dunes lies a celebration of contemporary beauty. “Our general idea of beauty has expanded so much,” Green explains. “I was excited to explore beauty today and to be able to present it in a context like the Pirelli Calendar, which has always celebrated it. We called the concept ‘Refresh and Reveal’ because we’re returning to the Calendar’s origins and celebrating the body in new ways that reflect the current moment.”

Fashion director Tonne Goodman faced her own challenge: finding outfits that could conceal just enough to reveal the models’ personalities. “That was the challenge, to find clothes that I could use as a device, not to express fashion but to express a personal attitude in revealing the body,” she shares, adding that trust and extensive fittings helped the models feel safe to be vulnerable — or daring. “It was absolutely fabulous,” Goodman says. “But it was also fun. “Fun” is one of those words that we sadly lack in our vocabulary these days.”

From rain-soaked beach shots to deep-water dives with Vincent Cassel, the shoot wasn’t without its hurdles. But if the stunning final images are anything to go by, it’s clear that the team nailed the balance between beauty, boldness, and cheeky freedom. The result? A calendar that’s as daring as it is timeless — and one we suspect will grace more walls than just garages.
