Over the last 18 months, a new breed of Ultrabooks and convertible laptops have hit the market, and even if there isn’t a market for them, the big players are certainly trying to create one. Being different is very much being cool. Is the all-new Acer Aspire P3 just that?

Another foray into the convertible laptop domain, the Acer Aspire P3 isn’t quite as funky as the R7, which was something right out of Star Trek. The P3 is a more mild-mannered affair, looking more like a swish leather-bound notebook whilst closed, giving it a rare suggestion of sophistication amongst portable computing.

Open it up, and you come across the hybrid. In much the same vein as the Surface, an adjustable viewing angle of 178 degrees allows for extreme folding, and when you don’t want the keyboard, you detach the touch screen. Under the hood, you’ll find options for Intel Core i3 or i5 CPUs and up to 128GB storage, with Microsoft Windows 8 and a choice of either 2 or 4GB of RAM. The screen is an 11.6-inch, 1,366×768 pixel IPS to give colours that extra clarity.
