Forget your Volkswagen California or Land Rover Defender with a roof tent. If your idea of a camping trip involves crossing deserts, scaling mountains, or surviving an actual apocalypse, then the Torsus Praetorian Liberra is your new dream machine.
This isn’t a campervan. It’s a 13-tonne overlanding fortress built on a military-grade MAN truck chassis, wrapped in steel, powered by 1,150Nm of diesel grunt, and finished inside like a luxury apartment. If you intend to survive DEFCON1 but want underfloor heating, this is the vehicle you need. It’s every bit as outrageous as it sounds.
Built to conquer, well, anything
The Liberra starts life as a Torsus Praetorian TG3, a beast of a vehicle originally designed to ferry work crews, emergency responders and adventurers across the world’s most punishing terrain like ice roads, jungle tracks, and disaster zones. This thing doesn’t flinch.
Then the team at German specialists All4Bus, working with motorhome builder Dammler and special vehicle fabricators FES Sachsen GmbH, get hold of it. The result? A proper, standing-height expedition motorhome with a 30cm roof lift, panoramic windows, and the kind of rugged refinement that’ll make it right at home at the Caravan Club’s Kaesŏng outpost.
The Praetorian’s MAN underpinnings mean it’s fully warrantied and serviceable at any MAN dealer worldwide, which is handy when your nearest neighbour is a snow leopard. With permanent 4×4, a 12-speed automatic gearbox, and suspension tough enough to laugh in the face of rutted tracks and raise an eyebrow at the Darien Gap, the Liberra is built to keep going long after the trail ends.
Its welded skeleton alone includes nearly 1.2 tonnes of steel. The thing is practically indestructible.
All comfort, no compromise
Inside, it’s a world away from the muddy, battered exterior. This is high-end motorhome territory, just packaged inside something that could survive a zombie uprising.
There’s a full kitchen with a 90-litre fridge, a 4-burner induction hob, oven, stainless steel sink, drawers, and even a dual-bin system. The shower comes with a proper water pump and a solid floor. Yes, there’s a toilet. Of course there’s a toilet.
You’ll sleep up to four in climate-controlled comfort, thanks to diesel-powered heating and roof-mounted air-con. There’s a Marshall sound system for evening tunes, mood lighting for that cosy “end of the world” vibe, and enough sockets, power and water to stay off-grid for weeks at a time.
And thanks to the bus-like windows, you can eat your dinner with a full panoramic view of a mountain range or desert sunrise. Try doing that in a tent while the rain gets in.
Built to a (high) price
Each Praetoria Liberra is custom-built, with buyers able to tweak everything from heating and cooling setups to interior layouts and off-grid upgrades. Fancy bigger fuel tanks, extra batteries, or specialist gear for remote desert travel? It’s all on the table.

Prices start from €580,000 (£503,000) — roughly the cost of a one-bed flat in Shoreditch. But this isn’t a status symbol. It’s a mobile basecamp for people who want to go anywhere, everywhere, and take their creature comforts with them.
Want to live for a month in the Sahara? Done. Cross the Siberian tundra? Easy, bar a few visa problems. Drive to the middle of nowhere and make a cup of tea while blasting Shake It Off through a Marshall speaker? That’s Tuesday.
