BMW has not only been churning out some quality cars of late, it’s also doing a very good job of teasing us with some rather amazing i-series concepts.
The latest to emerge is the new BMW i8 Spyder Concept.
Due to be officially unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show later this month, the i8 Spyder follows the equally stunning i8 Coupé concept and, just like its hard-top sibling, looks like a work of art.
Power comes from a hybrid setup combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine, producing 220bhp and driving the rear wheels, with a 129bhp electric motor powering the fronts.
The result? BMW reckons the i8 Spyder could manage 0-62mph in around five seconds.
Not bad for a hybrid.
The two-seater is obviously a convertible, but BMW has made a few other changes too. The Spyder has a slightly shorter wheelbase than the Coupé, along with upward-opening doors and a pair of roll-over bars behind the seats.
And while this is still officially a concept, BMW has already indicated that an i8 Spyder will make it into production, potentially during 2014.
There are some equally impressive claims for efficiency, with BMW quoting fuel economy of up to 94mpg.
Suddenly that rumoured £90,000 price tag doesn’t sound quite so ridiculous. Well, almost.
We’re already huge fans of BMW’s i-series concepts, and the i8 Spyder might just be the best-looking one yet.
