It’s been a long time coming, but Tesla, the high-performance electric sports car manufacturer, has finally released details of their much-anticipated Model S. The electric car will be available with packs ranging from 160 to 300 miles per recharge, giving drivers genuine flexibility depending on their driving needs and budget.
The Model S will get to 60 in a touch under six seconds. However, expect a sports model that promises a sub-five-second time, adding real performance car credentials to its electric powertrain.
The majority of the car is made from aluminium, with over a quarter of the weight of the car being purely from the battery pack. The dashboard is button sparse, with instead a 17-inch main display that is 3G and internet compatible, offering a glimpse into the future of in-car technology.
Once you have used all your power, the car will recharge in four hours using a 220V outlet, making overnight top-ups feasible.
Space is plentiful with no engine, though I still can’t work out how Tesla advertises this as seating seven people and their luggage. Apparently, five adults in normal seating, then two children facing the rear in what I assume is the boot. Luggage is then stored under the bonnet, thanks to the front trunk, or “frunk,” made possible by the lack of a traditional engine.
Worst bit? Don’t expect to see the Model S on the road until late 2011.
