The latest offering from budget-friendly baby brand Joie is the Porto travel stroller. For families who get out and about, a compact alternative to a heavy, bulky stroller can be surprisingly costly, but Porto, priced at £200, aims to make travelling light more affordable.

Suitable from birth, thanks to the lie-flat recline, Porto should see your child through until about 4 years of age, or 22kg, and it feels sturdy enough to do the job with ease.
If you are travelling abroad, Porto ticks several boxes, including IATA size compatibility. Measuring 23x44x55.3cm when folded, it falls well within the size guidance for aeroplane cabin storage, but always check with your airline before travel, as each airline has different policies.
It’s competitive in terms of weight, too. At 7.8kg, it isn’t the lightest on the market, with Cybex Libelle at 6kg and Bababing’s new Imi at 6.5kg, but the retractable carry strap and travel bag make it easy to handle.
Joie Porto travel stroller: What’s it like to use?
One of the most important features of a travel stroller is how well it folds. Not only should it be compact, but it should also be easy. Joie boasts that the Porto stroller folds with a single squeeze, clicking into a compact, freestanding package.
The folding mechanism works well and is operated with a single squeeze of the buttons on the handle. It was a little stiff to start, but became easier to squeeze after a few tries. Folding down is very simple, and it is self-supporting.
Once folded, the retractable carry strap at the base of the seat can be quickly pulled out and slung over your shoulder. When you unfold the pushchair, the shoulder strap automatically folds back into the seat base, which is a very neat solution.
Unfolding the Porto stroller uses the same squeeze method and can be managed one-handed with a little practice.
How comfortable is it?
What I love about Porto is the seat recline. Many rivals have only a few recline positions, from flat to upright, but Porto uses a ratchet system with multiple minor steps, giving you plenty of flexibility to find a comfortable position for your child.
Using the recline system is easy, smooth and quiet. Simply squeeze the trigger on the back of the seat and lower the seat to roughly where you want it, then release the trigger. The seat will then settle into place without any jolts or clunks, leaving the sleeping occupant in a peaceful state of slumber.
The adjustable leg support has fewer options, but it is well padded to ensure that whether it’s up or down, little calf muscles and legs are well cushioned.
The comfy cushioning isn’t confined to the leg rest. The contoured cushion continues across the seat pad and up the seat back, creating a cosy space that Mini Jane seemed very at home in. To ensure all-year-round comfort, plenty of ventilation is built in, so on the hottest days children have airflow to keep things cool.
The sun canopy is UPF 50+ rated to provide high levels of protection, and it’s also water repellent to protect from rain showers. Porto comes with a separate rain cover for more intense rainfall, so you’re covered for all eventualities.
The hood also features a mesh peek-a-boo window so you can easily keep an eye on the snoozing occupant as you walk, which, as the stroller is world-facing only, gives new parents more peace of mind.
Is there any storage?
Many compact travel strollers have compromised basket storage, such as the Silver Cross Jet 5, but Porto’s under-seat basket is surprisingly generous. Accessible from the front and the back, Joie claims it can handle up to 4.5kg of load. We haven’t tested that weight limit, but it can easily accommodate a good-sized changing bag or shopping bag, without the awkward access travel strollers sometimes have. The back has a fabric side that pushes down for easier entry; once loaded, let it go, and it springs back into place, keeping things contained.
There’s a small zipped pocket on the back of the seat, too, which is handy for keys and a small wallet, but isn’t big enough for most phones.
Any other notable features?
With smooth, easy-gliding wheels, the Porto travel stroller is a great choice for travel or everyday city living. While the seat unit is suitable for newborns, you might prefer not to lift a sleeping baby out of a car seat and into the pushchair. The good news here is that Joie has thought of that, too.
Porto is compatible with some car seats without the need for adaptors. Fully recline the stroller seat, and the car seat simply slips in, bracing against the bumper bar and the main frame. The downside is that it is only compatible with Joie i-Snug 2, Sprint and i-Starter infant car seats.
There is very little I’d change about the Porto, though one important adjustment is particularly tricky. The main straps have three height settings, which you can adjust as your child grows.
To adjust them, you have to push a small plastic tab through a very tight gap before repositioning it in the next slot. It’s annoying and fiddly, but once it’s done, it should be a little while before you need to do it again.
The other strap adjustments are much easier, taking seconds to tighten and loosen.
Adjustability continues throughout, with one notable exception: the handle. Shorter parents may find the handle a little too tall to comfortably manoeuvre the stroller, which is a shame in an otherwise excellent stroller.
Joie Porto Travel Stroller: The verdict
For families that love to travel or have limited storage space for a full-sized pushchair, the Joie Porto travel stroller presents a solid, comfortable and well-priced option. Its easy one-hand fold and aeroplane cabin compatibility make it a strong contender against higher-priced rivals, although the trade-off is a little extra weight.
For space-limited parents who already own a compatible Joie infant car seat, the ability to use it without adaptors is a useful bonus, while the ample storage space adds to the functionality.
Joie has packed plenty of useful features into this little footprint, creating a stable, comfortable pushchair that glides well over a variety of surfaces. What really sets Porto apart, though, is the price. At £200, it offers an impressive combination of comfort, quality and functionality without the premium price tag of some of its rivals.
What Porto might lack in colour choice, with just a single colourway currently available in the UK, it more than makes up for in value and functionality. For families looking for a capable travel stroller without spending a fortune, Porto is an easy one to recommend.
