Is it just me, or does the Sony Walkman name still take you back to listening to East 17 on a cassette? Despite the name, the tech has moved on significantly, and the new Sony Walkman X-series is looking to tackle the iPod Touch head-on with an OLED touchscreen, Wi-Fi, 16GB & 32GB memory options, and built-in noise cancellation.

It has a slightly smaller 3.0-inch screen than the iPod Touch, but it has a 432×240 pixel OLED screen for brighter colours and better contrast. It makes a viable portable video player with video support (including YouTube, thanks to built-in Wi-Fi), crisp visuals, and up to nine hours of battery life when watching.

Stick with listening to music, and the battery life extends as far as 33 hours, ensuring uninterrupted playback for long trips.

It also comes with tech not seen on an MP3 player to date — digital noise cancellation. Plug in any 3.5mm external headphones, and they will block out ambient noise, making the need for expensive headphones virtually obsolete.

The Sony Walkman is available to pre-order on Amazon now, with shipping expected in 2–5 weeks. The 16GB NWZ-X1050B will cost £214 and 32gig NWZ-X1060B will cost £283.

An iPod killer? Maybe, just maybe…
