HTC Reveals Five New Phones and the Flyer Tablet at MWC 2011

HTC has gone all out at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, releasing details of five new phones (two touted as ‘Facebook’ phones) and an HTC tablet. Which of these might you want to have as your next phone? We take a look at them all with brief specs:

HTC Wildfire S

HTC’s current entry-level smartphone has had an upgrade, although there’s nothing to get too excited about. Pictured above, the phone is actually smaller than previously, thanks to the removal of the optical trackpad, while it also gains a new HVGA screen. Other specs remain similar:

• 600MHz Qualcomm single-core processor
• 512MB RAM and ROM
• WiFi b/g/n
• Bluetooth 3.0
• 5-megapixel rear camera with auto-focus and flash
• Android 2.4 Gingerbread OS

HTC Desire S

The major changes to the Desire S centre around its looks and feel. The new Desire S is moulded from a single block of aluminium, making it feel high-quality in the hand. Of course, it runs the latest Android 2.4 Gingerbread. Apart from that, it’s pretty much as you were, with:

• Qualcomm single-core 1GHz processor
• 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen
• 5 megapixel rear camera, VGA front and 720p video recording
• 1.1GB onboard storage and 768MB of RAM

HTC Incredible S

Europe welcomes the Incredible, and it’s about time. Bringing the highest specification we have seen on an HTC device in Europe, could this be the first true contender to the iPhone? It’s a high-tech smartphone, featuring:

• 1GHz Qualcomm single-core processor
• 8-megapixel autofocus with dual-LED flash camera
• Front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera
• 1.1GB of onboard storage and 768MB of RAM

HTC ChaCha Facebook Phone

The ChaCha is the first Facebook phone out in the wild, and after months of rumours, everything is finally confirmed. The HTC ChaCha revealed at MWC features a physical QWERTY keyboard and a 2.6-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen. It’s eye-catching feature is a dedicated Facebook button which you can use to instantly share photos, links or anything else. There’s also:

• 600MHz Qualcomm processor
• 512MB RAM and ROM
• 5-megapixel camera and front-facing VGA
• WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS

HTC Salsa Facebook Phone

Salsa is yet another Facebook phone from HTC. Aimed at the younger teen market, the HTC Salsa has a similar spec to the ChaCha but without the QWERTY keyboard and featuring a larger 3.4-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen. It includes a dedicated Facebook button, too. Other specs include:

• 800MHz Qualcomm processor
• 512MB RAM and ROM
• 5-megapixel camera and front-facing VGA
• WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS

HTC Flyer Tablet

The HTC Flyer is a 7-inch Android-based tablet powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm single-core processor and running Android 2.4 Gingerbread OS. In a first for HTC, it also includes a battery-powered stylus, which works for input as well as the expected multi-touch gesture support.

With HTC recently getting involved with OnLive, you can expect streaming gaming, movies and TV. All the goodness is packed into the now-flagship unibody aluminium chassis, which houses both front and rear cameras, a microUSB port, and a microSD card slot.

Could this be an iPad beater? Perhaps, although they are slightly different markets, with the Flyer being a fair size smaller.

There we have it, a quick round-up of what fell out of the HTC MWC bag. It’s a pretty impressive lineup, but we just wish the tablet had gone up against the iPad and been a little bigger rather than an oversized phone.
