Protecting our skin should be among our top priorities, but for many of us, it’s still an afterthought. We remember to slap on the sunscreen on holiday or during a heat wave, but what about the rest of the time?  The founder of Dussl, Fraser Wilson, set out to create a gender-neutral skincare brand that worked for everyone, every day, to become part of the daily routine. We tried out a couple of the products to see if he hit the brief.

Packaged in a sleek dark green and white colour scheme, the Dussl skincare range has certainly hit the gender-neutral aesthetic. With no pinks or blues, it looks premium and confident, and won’t look out of place in any bathroom cabinet or dressing table.

Dussl Daily Protection Moisturiser SPF50
From £30.60

There is a growing number of daily moisturisers that now contain SPF, making skin protection part of the daily routine. Dussl incorporates SPF50 in its dermatologically tested daily protection moisturiser, which is suitable for all skin types. It also uses vegan and cruelty-free ingredients, making products kind to your skin, and to the planet, too.

What’s it like?

As we popped the top off and pumped the inaugural pump, the first thing we noticed was how smooth the cream was. It spread easily across the skin, leaving behind none of the tell-tale white smears or greasy feeling that are often associated with sunscreen.

Once it was massaged fully into the skin, it felt light and well-absorbed almost immediately, with no stickiness left behind. The directions on the bottle recommend using “1 teaspoon full of the product” to rub over the face and neck, but how do you judge a teaspoon full? For us, that seemed a little vague, so we used three hearty pumps — enough, we hoped, for good, even coverage.

What was really good was the scent or, more precisely, the lack of one. Dussl Daily Protection Moisturiser is almost entirely scent-free, which is a great selling point for many people. It also makes this a product that can sit on the bathroom shelf of a couple and be happily used by them both.

Dussl Lip Protection Oil

With our faces sorted, we turned our attention to the lips, which are just as delicate and exposed to the elements. Yes, you will probably end up with some of the sunscreen on them, but having a dedicated product offers that extra layer of protection, from the wind as well as the sun. With SPF15 built in, the lip protection oil offers medium protection.

What’s it like?

Being a lip oil, it has an inherently stickier feel on application. We found that the best approach was to roll a small amount onto one lip and then smoosh the lips together to distribute it evenly.

After application, it did absorb to some degree, but the sticky feeling stayed around for a while, which was a little off-putting for the more masculine Joes. Our Janes loved it, as it had a very similar feel to lip gloss, while giving a boost of protection.

This one wasn’t scent-free, but the watermelon flavour was thankfully quite subtle.

Dussl skincare: What’s the verdict?

Adding skin protection to your daily routine is not a bad thing to do. Dussl protects against UVA and UVB, which we all encounter on a daily basis, whether in sunshine or cloud, so why not? Using a product that not only moisturises but also protects from ageing, fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage seems like a logical step.

A 50ml bottle of SPF 50 Daily Protection Moisturiser starts at £34 for a one-off purchase, with a 10% discount available for subscription, which is a little pricey compared to some high street brands like Bulldog, but if you’re happy to splash out, you won’t be disappointed.
