First Look: Mini Coupe Breaks Cover

It’s finally official — the new Mini Coupe has been unleashed and will be hitting the roads this October. And you know what? We love it.

Mini has never exactly been shy when it comes to design, and the Coupe is no different. The biggest talking point is that roof — which looks a bit like an aerodynamic cycling helmet — but it works. It gives the car a lower, more aggressive stance compared to the standard hatch.

There’s also an active rear spoiler that automatically deploys at speeds above 50mph, adding a bit of theatre (and a bit of function) to the mix.

Engines and Performance

There will be four versions available at launch.

The entry-level model gets a 1.6-litre engine producing 120bhp, while the Cooper S steps things up with 181bhp. At the top of the range sits the John Cooper Works model, delivering a healthy 208bhp.

There’s also a diesel option — the SD — which produces 141bhp from a 2.0-litre engine. It looks like an interesting all-rounder, offering a 0–62mph time of 7.9 seconds alongside impressive economy of 65.7mpg.

Performance-wise, the base model will hit 62mph in around 9 seconds, while the JCW cuts that down to a much more lively 6.4 seconds.

More Practical Than You’d Expect

Surprisingly, the Coupe is actually more practical than the standard Mini hatch.

Boot space jumps to 280 litres — more than double the usual offering — although you do lose the rear seats. Not a huge sacrifice, given how usable they were to begin with.

The Competition

Mini is pitching the Coupé against cars like the Audi TT — although if we’re being honest, it plays things in a slightly different way.

Where it really stands out is on price. Starting at just over £16,000 and topping out at around £23,795 for the JCW, it undercuts a lot of its rivals by a fair margin.

Is it the most “serious” sports car out there? Probably not. But that’s not really the point. The Mini Coupe is different, fun, and just a bit left-field — exactly what you’d expect from Mini.

And let’s be honest… you might buy it for someone else, but you’ll definitely end up driving it yourself.
