Stealth Mode Activated: Lotus Exige Scura Unleashed

With the global economic downturn taking its toll on motor shows around the world, the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show was noticeably quieter than usual. Many major manufacturers stayed away, but Lotus turned up — and brought with it a striking new special edition: the Lotus Exige Scura.

Named after the Italian word for “dark,” the Exige Scura is a stealthy, track-focused evolution of the standard Exige. The matte black paint, accented with subtle gloss black stripes, gives it a purposefully aggressive stance that sets it apart from its more colourful siblings. Unsurprisingly, the nickname “Stealth” has stuck.

Lotus has taken its weight-saving mantra to the next level with the Exige Scura. It features carbon fibre seats, centre console, front splitter, oil cooler inlets, and rear diffuser — all contributing to a lighter kerb weight. Under the engine cover sits a 1.8-litre supercharged Toyota-sourced engine, producing 260bhp and 174lb-ft of torque.

The performance matches the style: With such a light frame, the Exige Scura can hit 60mph in just 4.1 seconds and tops out at 152mph. With razor-sharp handling, minimal distractions, and a race-bred feel, it’s a proper driver’s car — more go-kart than GT cruiser.

Just 35 examples of the Exige Scura will be built, making it one of the most exclusive variants of the Exige ever made. At around £45,000, it’s not cheap for a Lotus, but buyers are getting something rare, raw, and utterly focused.
